In order to adopt an animal from the Harare SPCA you need to go down to the kennels and fill in the application to adopt forms. The requirements for that include; that you have Zimbabwean citizenship or permanent residency, that your other pets are all spayed or neutered and that you have not surrendered any pets to SPCA before.
Once that is passed you can walk around and look at the animals and interact with any you think may be suitable. If you find one (or more) you like you can book the animal and you pay $10 for a home check to be done by one of our inspectors. They will visit your property in the following few days.
They look for things like the condition of your other animals, the relationship between you, your family and your staff with the animals you currently have, if the garden is sufficiently big for the animals to exercise themselves, if the fence or wall and gate is secure and there is nothing leaning against it that the animal could use to escape. They check for open wells or rubbish pits the animal could fall into, as well as for shelter and shade that you have provided for the animal if it will not be allowed to sleep in the house (cats must be allowed to sleep inside). The shelter must protect from rain and heat in summer and cold and damp in winter. It must have a raised floor so that the dog’s blankets do not get wet.
If the inspectors are happy then you can return to SPCA to collect the animal/s you chose.
Adopting a dog is $82 and a cat is $52. This covers vaccinations, microchipping and sterilisation. If the animal is not old enough to be sterilised then you sign a contract agreeing to bring it back within a certain time period to spay or neuter it which will be done for free at our animal hospital.
