SPCA Map

Animals are more than ever a test of our character, of mankind’s capacity for empathy and for decent, honourable conduct and faithful stewardship.
We are called to treat them with kindness, not because they have rights or power or some claim to equality, but in a sense because they don’t -
because they all stand unequal and powerless before us.    Matthew Scully

5 Freedoms for Animals

Five Freedoms

The SPCA continues to encourage pet owners to sterilize their animals to prevent unwanted litters and to think seriously about allowing their bitch to have "just one litter".
The number of unwanted animals in Zimbabwe & indeed worldwide has reached epidemic proportions & we as a community must bear the responsibility of trying to stem this tide.

The dream of everyone involved in animal rescue is to one day to have empty cages, no suffering, no fear and no sadness and no broken hearts.

About Us

Harare SPCA

Established in 1911, the Harare SPCA is the oldest Animal Welfare Organisation in Zimbabwe.

The Harare SPCA is a registered, non-profit organisation (PVO 83/67).

We act as the Official Municipal Pound but do not receive any government or municipal funding.

Funding to keep the Society going is reliant on the good will and support of concerned Corporate entities, Individuals and Fund Raising efforts.
There have been many improvements made to The Harare Spca’s facilities in 2017. The leaky roof has been repaired and repainted. The exterior wall and the consultation rooms have been painted very kindly by Dulux. A brand new exercise and environmental enrichment area has been sponsored and built by the incredible group of volunteer dog walkers. A vehicle has been bought and kitted out with heavy duty cages in the back to ensure the inspectors can transport any kind of dog or cat safely. The hospital wards are currently being refurbished too. Projects in line for 2018 are to refurbish the theatre and prep room as well as repairing and painting the ceilings.

The Harare SPCA operates from two premises: the Clinic and the Re-homing Kennels.

Harare SPCA is the first "Go To" place people will consult when their pet is missing – either to report or to search for.

Our role is to provide safe sanctuary and care for animals in and around Harare and at the same time endeavour to educate the populace about animal care to prevent ill treatment and cruelty to animals and promote sterilisation. We cover the whole of the Greater Harare area which includes all high density areas and Ruwa. No animal in need is ever turned away from our doors.

All Strays are brought to this facility. They are checked, scanned for a microchip, vaccinated and kept for the mandatory 10 days in the Clinic kennels before being moved over to the Re-homing kennels.

Our Inspector - trained by ZNSPCA and accredited by the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Water Resources - responds to and investigates reports of cruelty and neglect, collects animals reported injured in road traffic accidents and picks up lost or stray animals.

He also checks that homes of applicants who wish to adopt an animal are suitable and prepared.

Post home-checks are also carried out to ensure all is well with the newly adopted pet and its new owners.

Any reports of cruelty or neglect, animals in need or reports of lost and found animals should be made to the Clinic Reception: All reports of cruelty are treated in confidence.
